Taboos

Different cultures have different morals. However, there are a few things which remain constant throughout the Broken World, and are thought to be throwbacks to the morality of a culture which existed before the fragmentation.

Never Trust Birds

Most cultures fear birds and will only speak of them in hushed whispers; if a bird has entered a house, nobody from outside the household will enter for at least a month, and the household themselves will be shunned for a similar length of time.

Family is pure

It is considered taboo to have sexual relations with someone related to you by blood. It is equally taboo to betray your blood, no matter how much they annoy you.

Let the Red Fruit Be

Cutting down cherry trees is forbidden in all circumstances, although nobody is quite sure why.

Innocence is Sacred

All cultures frown upon killing or hurting anyone considered a child.

On steel and Mind

Some clans find it vulgar to allow metal to touch their forehead. Some clans consider it vulgar not to have something metallic around their neck.

Red Sky at Night

If the storms shed a pure red light, especially a weak one, it is considered unlucky to work that day.

Curl your Hair

The cutting of hair holds a special significance. Many clans only cut their hair when it is long enough to curl around a stick. Such hair is then burnt.
