Marriage

Clans recognise the importance of fresh blood. Not only is this an excellent way to gain trust before trade, it is the only way to trade skills and knowledge. The moment two fragments meet, the clan matchmakers hurry together to discuss some of the most sensitive negotiations possible at unimaginable speed…

Marriage is, however, a somewhat melancholy affair. Once the couple has been married, they will have to decide which family’s fragment to stay on, whether by casting lots, reading the clouds, or comparing dowries. Once the fragment has moved on it is unlikely that the unlucky party will see their family again, as it is extremely unlikely those two fragments will meet come back together in her lifetime.

People tend to marry quite young, as with all the dangers in the world you’re never quite sure when life’s going to be cut short. Marriage rituals vary through the different belief systems.

Examples

Storm Worship

Storm worshippers give jewels to their partners, to indicate their role in the relationships, the colour of the stones representing different aspects. Amethysts for home makers, Emeralds for providers, Opals for Protectors, Rubies for lovers, Sapphires for companionship. It is not uncommon to give more than one.

Ancestor Worship

Those who venerate their ancestors say their vows in front of the tombs, saying they will continue the family, show honour and respect for their partner, and will do their best to bring new life to the clan.

Nature Worship

Worshippers of nature have simple ceremonies, with a few gifts to symbolise their new connection, and a few words containing what they promise to do. The exact form changes between fragments.

Organisation

As there is such a great variety of marriage rituals, one of the big challenges of the matchmakers from each clan is to devise a marriage ceremony that suits both clans. Couples having to go through two radically different ceremonies in order to appease both clans are not unheard of. Another thing to note is that an essential part of planning the ceremony is getting a geomancer to lock both fragments’ motion to each other so that the happy couple can complete their arrangements and make their goodbyes.
