Thak Umbar is male and 40.

The leader of a small tribe of hunter-gatherers, Thak wants little more than to ensure his tribe's survival. At present, that seems in doubt; constant moving between fragments and a strange sickness has sapped their strength and left them weak. This archipelego presents a new chance, a fresh start, but deep down Thak knows that soon enough he will have to get his hands dirty again…

The Tribe of the Shifting Sky has been wandering the fragments for centuries, going wherever they can to survive. They get food by hanging their nets off the side of the fragments and catching whatever flies through them, and generally this gives them enough to survive. Even so they live a basic life - they wear clothes of tanned skins and armour of exoskeleton, and live in small tents that provide little protection from rain and Storm. Around the firelight the village elders take it in turns to tell stories of the Tribe's history. According to the elders. they have been travelling ever since their home was devastated by raiders, in search of some prophesised haven. Unfortunately, the route has not always been clear, and a long time ago the tribe decided to split when the choice was that or fight. Even so, they hope that the tribe will one day be unified, and that together they will find the land promised to them. Unfortunately, at the moment there is a vile sickness sweeping the tribe; children are developing deadly fevers seemingly at random, while adults are suddenly and awefully turning mad. This is causing great distress.

Gammer Olie (92)is the tribe matriarch, having been a prominent member of the tribe for as long as anyone can remember. These days, she takes a more hands-off approach to the running of the clan, although many have commented on the dark looks that pass between her and Thak…

• Tough - she's 92 for crying out loud!
• Loyal - she uses the devotion of the tribe to get her away, playing the 'frail old lady' card often and effectively.
• Out there somewhere - old enough to remember th split as a child.
• Backwards - she can't abide anything more complex than a net, a spear and a bow, and so is the major force stopping the development of the clan.
• Sickness - seems strangely immune to the malaise of the tribe.

Gammer Olie knows a lot more than most members of the tribe about what Thak did to get the top spot in the clan, and has made sure he knows this. Thus, by hanging this secret over his head she aims to keep the tribe on her course, and make sure he does what she wants him to.
